An Open Letter On Gay Marriage

Please read all of it.

Today the bill legalising Gay marriage comes back for debate in the House of Commons.  As such I have been personally carefully considering the arguments on both sides of the debate to decide what the most rational course is.

After due deliberation I have decided that the bill must be opposed for 1 very good reason: you cannot change the definition of marriage.

In fact I would like the government to go further.  I am calling for the repealing of the Married Women’s Property Act 1882.  Before this act the definition of marriage was that a woman was a feme covet to her husband.  After marriage the woman ceased to be an individual, her legal identity ceased to exist and all her property became that of her husband.  This change in the definition of marriage altered it such that a woman maintained her legal identity after marriage rather than becoming a nonexistent servant of man

Surely everyone can see what disastrous consequences this had, women would go on to get jobs and lives of their own, get the vote, be allowed to divorce a husband who beat them as well as allowing them to not live in poverty if they ever did choose to leave their husbands.

So please understand you cannot change the definition of marriage just to allow legal rights, that is wrong.  The definition of a word must always stay the same, after all that is why we only have one dictionary.
